San Francisco/Sunset
San Francisco's Sunset District covers a large residential area on the West side of San Francisco. Its boundaries are roughly defined by Stanyan st. and the Haight Ashbury district to the east, Golden Gate park to the north, SFSU to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The vast majority of the housing in the area was constructed between 1920 and 1950. The moniker "Sunset" is a bit of a misnomer: the area is often covered in fog. However, whether or not the sun is shining it is a charming neighborhood to visit.

Get in
Much of the area is accessible via the N-Judah Muni line as well as various bus lines. Driving from the north or south, one can access the Sunset from Hwy 1.

Eat
A thriving restaurant area is to be found around 9th and Irving street. Some local favorites are:
- Ebisu. Often cited as the best sushi on the West Coast of the US.
- Crepevine, 624 Irving Street (at 10th), 415-681-5858. A laid back California style eatery with a largely Brazilian staff. Scrambles, omelettes, sandwiches, soups, and, of course, crepes, fill the chalkboard menu. The chicken vegetable soup is a favorite. - Tasty Curry, 9th Avenue (between Irving and Judah). Cheap, divey, tasty, and Halal. Delicious Indian/Pakistani food that will fill you up and not break the bank. The decor is... interesting. Both the food and personable waiters are an improvement over the staid Naan 'n' Curry. No reservations are necessary. Gumball machines provided. (415) 753-5122.
- Gordo's, 9th Avenue (near Golden Gate Park). Cheap, reliable, rapid burritos and tacos.
- New Eritrea, Irving Street (between 9th and 10th). Huge platters of Eritrean (Ethiopian) food are served up here, along with native beers and lots of Injera bread. Portions are not for the timid. - Howard's, Awesome breakfasts.
- Arizmendi Bakery, Chocolate things!!! and yummy pizza.
- San Tung, Irving St. Lines form down the block to eat at this dumpling house.
- Andy's Excellent Chinese Food. Eat for under $5 with med students.
- Yum Yum Fish, 2181 Irving Street, 415-566-8433. Eat high-quality sushi for low prices in this fish market/sushi bar. The atmosphere ain't much, but the fish is definitely yummy and plentiful.
Elsewhere in the Sunset:
- There is a major Asian shopping district on Irving from 19th to 25th Avenues with restaurants, supermarkets, a Taiwanese bakery, and tapioca drink places.
- S & E Cafe, 2406 19th Avenue (at Taraval), 415-665-7868. Daily 11:00 am to 2:00 a.m. Midwestern American food as seen through Hong Kong eyes: complete meals include soup, roll, coffee or HK milk tea, entree, rice or spaghetti, Jello or Chinese bean soup dessert. Extensive list of unusual beverages from Ovaltine to Ginger Coke to green tea milk shakes; Chinese food available after 10:00 pm only. Coffee shop ambiance with TVs at low volume usually tuned to a Chinese station. $7-14 for complete dinners; $3-7 apps and other dishes; $2-4 for beverages.

There are numerous bars in the area around 9th and Irving.
