The Sierra Nevada region of California is the state's own alpine region. It is a region of grandiose sizes; the highest peak in the Continental US, Mount Whitney, is here, as well as the largest living things on earth, the giant sequoias.
The area has a low human population. Most of the towns and cities in the Sierra Nevada region are ski resort towns, or gateways to the area's parks.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range covers a wide region is the eastern part of California. You could spend an entire trip in just one region, or sample them all.
